About Us

The Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps responds to emergency 911 calls in Harrington Park around the clock. Our Corps also serves in a mutual aid system with the neighboring towns of Alpine, Closter, Demarest, Northvale, Norwood, and Rockleigh.

When requested, it accompanies the Harrington Park Fire Department calls when a Fire emergency occurs. The men and women of the Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps give their time, effort and talent to bring pre-hospital emergency medical care to those in need.

Our Mission

The Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps is a group of dedicated, trained, New Jersey state certified volunteers prepared twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, to provide pre-hospital emergency medical services to the residents of Harrington Park. Our mission also includes assisting those with emergency situations in neighboring towns through a Mutual Aid System. We do this in a fiscally responsible manner and with the professionalism expected by those we serve.

The Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that relies on the generosity and good will of those in the community to support its financial needs. Our services are always free of charge with no cost to the patient.

Join Us

We depend on the time and effort of our members to not only staff our duty shifts and respond during emergencies, but also to perform all other tasks involved in the successful operation of the Corps. Our volunteers are highly trained and dedicated to respond to emergencies, but we could always use additional help. We will provide all the necessary training free of charge. Our current ambulance, which we purchased back in 2013, is equipped with the most up-to-date resources and communications to provide emergency pre-hospital medical care. On board, we have a vital signs monitor, an automatic CPR machine, defibrillator, oxygen, and other equipment that is necessary to save lives.

Our facility, located at 15 Kline Street, Harrington Park, NJ, 07640, serves as the central hub for the Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Strategically situated in the heart of Harrington Park, our location ensures swift response times and easy accessibility for both volunteers and community members.

Spring of 1957

The Lion's Club and Fire Department worked together throughout the following months to solicit donations of materials to construct the headquarters and for money to purchase equipment. The necessary land, on the corner of Kline St. and Short Place was leased from the Borough and the Fire Company for $1. The expenses for the building were less than $500. Most of the labor except for the foundation work was performed by volunteers.

December 1, 1957

The official beginning of the Corps was December 1, 1957. They answered their first call on December 4th 1957.
There were 39 Charter Members. The first President was Fred Quantmeyer Sr. and the first Captain was Benjamin Westervelt. Both men served two-year terms.

Spring of 1957

The idea of an Ambulance Corps had been in the thinking of the Harrington Park Lions Club and Fire Department long before it became a reality. By the Spring of 1957, the Lions Club, under the presidency of Andrew Frank, and the Fire Department started actively to plan the beginning of a volunteer ambulance service in the Borough.

1960

June 1963

Dispatching the Ambulance was done by phoning the members at home from the Dispatch Center in Mahwah or from the HP Police headquarters. The Corps later upgraded its dispatching system by providing each member with a home pager, and then upgraded to the current portable pagers.

June 1963

After over six thousand miles and five and a half years, the original ambulance was replaced with a used Cadillac, at a cost of $6,750. The purchase in June 1963 was again made possible through donations. In May 1966 this ambulance was replaced new 1966 Oldsmobile.At this time were 44 members.

A subsequent ambulance was a converted Cadillac hearse and a fourth rig went into service in 1974 with a modular design.

1992

The Corps is seen at the Memorial Day Parade, celebrating 35 years. It participates in all Town functions having a presence at the Ragamuffin Parade, the Memorial Day Parade and the Town Picnic, the annual Fishing contest, the various running and walking events, and any function that draws a crowd. They take their turn at Old Tappan Regional High School Football events. The Corps is a member of the 18th District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council.

The Corps started to admit Junior members in 2001.

The cost of the 2004 ambulance, the sixth rig, was close to $100.000.
